CA Act 1 Investigation & Product Review

BA2 criticise an existing digital product to find both positive and negative points to inform your own product research

You will be making an interactive multimedia/web product for 14/16 year olds based around the theme of The Sporting World - it can be educational, informative or just for fun.

TASK 1:

List at least 5 interactive websites that you have looked at for inspiration in the research phase in your Assets Table

TASK 2:

Using the Review Template, complete the Strengths, Weaknesses and Overview of 1 of the sites you have listed in your Assests Table.

The site you have chosen to review does not need to have a 14/16 year old slant, but perhaps it should...?

Try to use the skills you acquired during the practise review lesson to help you.

The deadline for this is 25/4/14.

HWK: Attend after school catch up to meet the deadine.

CA Act1 Reviewing a Digital Product

BA2 understand the importance of the design review process by evaluating and criticising an existing digital product

ON ENTRY:

Consider the following question:

"The most common form of feedback is 'it's good'. If a product is only 'good', would you still buy it?"

STARTER:

You will be reviewing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/ during this lesson.

You have 12 minutes to review 1 of the following factors of the Cbeebies website
  1. Strengths
  2. Weaknesses
  3. Improvements

Come and stick your work on the wall in the correct area in the room.

TASK:

In the shared exam folder (Unit 4 CAB May 2013) there are 2 files for you to write up today's findings from all 3 of the sections you have covered.

Decide which one you wish to use - One has guidelines, the other does not.

To reach the higher grades you should be pushing yourself to use higher writing skills.

Challenge yourslef to 200+ words per section...

PLENARY:

HOQ: We have thought today about Strengths, Weaknesses and Improvements. What other areas are there to think about when designing a product, if any...?

How well do you believe you have achieved today's Objective?

On your post-it note, explain one thing that you have learnt about the design review process and will be able to take it away with you from today's lesson.

I really do not understand at all!
I think, with help, I could explain the design review process
I could explain the design review process confidently
I could explain the main areas of the design review process and suggest other ideas too!

TB2L8 Can You See What it is Yet?

BA2 breakdown the components of a movie clip by producing a full storyboard

STARTER:

Storyboards allow you to visualise and fine-tune key frames in a shoot before filming or editing.

Why? - Think, Pair, Share...

TASK:

So what kind of Digital Products do you think would benefit from a design document such as a Timeline Storyboard?

Using the resource: O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2 B\Timeline StoryBoard develop a storyboard for a 5 minute movie of your choice.

Rules:
  1. The theme of the movie can be your choice (action/adventure/sports/rom com etc)
  2. It can be an original idea or a film you have seen
  3. You can develop a 'whole movie' or just the trailer for it, but it must have a coherent storyline
  4. It should last between 4 and 5 minutes
  5. Your designs should be hand drawn
  6. You need to list the time that the scene lasts (and the overall movie time) as well as briefly describing any audio, special effects and scene transition that happens

An example of a hand drawn storyboard

This video may help you!!!

There is a selection of trailers for you to follow, if you need help, in: O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2 B\Trailers

PLENARY:

Where else have you seen storyboards in use? Discuss in pairs, be prepared to feedback!

TB2L7 Thinking in Pictures

BA2 define what a moodboard is and how it can be used to help develop a Digital product by creating one yourself

STARTER:

Before you start on any detailed design work you must create a moodboard. This is where you communicate your initial design ideas for your Product. You should use it to get feedback from your testers. Use the comment section of this post to submit your current understanding
  • What is a moodboard?
  • What goes on a moodboard?
  • What does not go on a moodboard?

TASK:

Imagine Hamble College is launching a new site directed purely at the students, and you are in charge of designing it.

Your Moodboard will be a loose collage to convey the type of look and feel you are going for. It can be thrown together quickly and does not force you to make decisions about smaller details such as fonts or specific colours.
Before starting you need to come up with a list of adjectives for each board. An example might be:
  • Dark, glossy, slick, modern, edgy, hard, aggressive
  • Soft, muted, round, layered, elegant, realistic
  • Colorful, rough, sketchy, bright, illustration

These adjectives serve as guidelines to pull together the elements. The words (and boards) should have strong differences, including a wide range of styles.

Once you have your adjectives you can start getting creative:
  • Grab bits of inspiration from anywhere you choose
  • Scan in things you find around you or search online for suitable pictures and textures
  • Sometimes it is helpful to include screenshots of other sites with a similar look and feel
  • Photogrpah colours/textures you notice around you

Use the Moodboard_list in O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2 B if you are still unsure

NOTE: Don’t forget to label your Moodboard with the adjectives you have chosen to work with

EMAIL: Your documents to me so that I can have them printed in colour for you lfenner@hamblecollege.co.uk

Examples of professional moodboards:

Examples of student moodboards:

PLENARY:

Designing loosely lets you brainstorm, explore and play with different styles without all the limitations a layout (and coding realities) will later impose. They also keep revision cycles to a minimum, as you can get feedback very early on in the design process.

Revisit and comment on your original posts to re-evaluate what you now know about moodboards

HWK: Bring in any material/magazines/pictures that you might be able to use on your moodboard next lesson

TB2L5 Listen & Learn

BA2 recognise the importance and value of feedback by considering both positives and negatives

STARTER: Think, Pair, Share – When, how, why and where!

Think about your experiences on when, how, why and where you have given, received and responded to feedback

With a partner, work together, sharing ideas, discussing, clarifying and challenging each other’s thoughts
Each pair is to ‘share’ their ideas with the whole class (It is important that you need to be able to share your partner’s ideas as well as your own)

TASK 1:

Investigate an example where a Digital Product has been updated in light of feedback and through a number of iterations over the years...some of which you might even remember!

Take a trip in a time machine back to 1995....

In your pairs, using this document O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2\TB2 L5 R2 complete both of the following links for how the CBBC Website has been redesigned over time...

Blog A

Blog B

You need to make sure that you have a completed document by the end of this lesson.

TASK 2:

See if you can find any other 'old' examples of popular websites from today and compare them to how they look now... YouTube, SkySports, Facebook for example

Consider:
  • How they have changed?
  • What improvements have happened?
  • Is there anything that is 'worse' now?

The Original YouTube layout 2005

Screenshot and write about your findings in software ofyour choice.

TB2L4 Be Prepared!

BA2 understand the methods and benefits of document sampling and background research as a means of gathering information

STARTER:

‘A stitch in time saves nine’

‘Measure twice, cut once’

‘Look before you leap’

‘Fools rush in where angels fear to tread’

What do all these sayings have in common? - They’re all about thinking before acting.

Why? Because it saves time, money, effort and embarrassment.

It’s plain common sense, yet, when it comes to Digital Product development, this common sense seems to disappear. All too often, projects start before thought has been put into the project’s purpose, its desired results, and how its success will ultimately be measured.

“If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it!”
Albert Einstein
Use documents from O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2

TASK 1:

Open TB2L4R3 and complete the User Groups you decided upon for the Hamble Sports College Website. List all of the jobs that the website will need to do and then mark what User Group will use that feature.

TASK 2:

Research existing Digital Products that are similar to the Hamble Sports College Website and using TB2L4R4, list all the features that you may want to include/exclude from a redesign of the HCSC site.

EXT:

Use TB2L4R2 to make notes on Document Sampling and Background Research as you have before

PLENARY:

Begin to think about presenting all the work you have completed so far from this teaching block, ready for marking!

TB2L3 Big Brother

ON ENTRY: Think about when you have ever been observed - what did this mean to you?

TARGET: At the end of this lesson you will be able to:
  • Value the methods and benefits of User observation as a means of gathering information
  • Appreciate the methods and benefits of Profiling as a means of gathering information

STARTER: Why would the aliens need to observe us before invading??

  • Who was being observed?
  • Who was doing the observing?
  • Did mankind know they were being observed?
  • Where did they make their observation from?
  • Why were the aliens observing mankind?

TASK:

Use Observations & Profiling in O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2 to independently take notes on this lesson's key terms (this will inform your homework for next lesson):
  • User Observations
  • Profiling

USER OBSERVATIONS:

In pairs, make as many observations about your partner as possible. Using different colours, highlight between Observations and Assumptions (guesses).

You have 5 minutes (2 1/2 minutes each) to complete the Summary section of Observations & Profiling

Observe me... You have 20 seconds to make some Observations and/or Assumptions about me - how did you draw your conclusions?

Using this knowledge consider the Benefits, Method and Reporting of User Observations and complete them on Observations & Profiling - do not be afraid to discuss your answers!!

PROFILING:

Where might you have heard of the term 'Profiling' or 'Profile' before?

Example of Use of Digital Products by Users and Stakeholders

Analyse or 'create User Profiles' for different users of the College website - is it just Students?!

www.hamblecollege.co.uk
EXT 1:

Think about the meaning of 'Stakeholders'. List them in the same way you have just done.

EXT 2:

Choose 1 of your Users you have just suggested. Try to outline the characteristics of the people in that user group.

The example is there to help you, have a go on your own....

OUTCOMES: By the end of the lesson...
  • All of you will have an understanding of the usefulness of User Observations and Profiling
  • Most of you will be able to compare User Groups to Stakeholders
  • Some of you will be able to analyse a users Characteristics

PLENARY:

Define for me your understanding of the terms User Observations, Profiling, Stakeholders and Characteristics

Post your answers as a comment on THIS post. Remember to select Name/URL as your profile and only include your FIRST name on your post

EXT: Consider other's views and comment on their posts...

TB2L1 Getting the go ahead!

BA2 understand the purpose and content of a product brief

STARTER:

Appreciate where TB2 lays in the scheme of the course: Teaching Blocks > Skills Building > Controlled Assessment

Create a short document detailing the definitions of a BRIEF and a PROPOSAL and how they work together

TASK:
  1. Audience & Purpose
  2. Outline of how it will work
  3. Outline of user interface
  4. Testing
In your groups, mindmap your section of a Proposal, think about the following points:
  • How this will inform design decisions
  • What activities need to be carried out
  • What resources will be needed
  • How long they think it will take
  • Identify what else they need to know
  • How will they gather the information
TASK 2:

Digital Product: iPad app for the hard of hearing

In your new groups, consider the detail and reason of what kind of information is required, where that information would be acquired from and how it would be acquired. To do this, open up TB2 L1R2 A- D from O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB2 and complete your section for your new group.

When complete, you will need to print your document once for everyone in your group - everyone should end up with all four sections.

Clip together and place in folders.

TB1L7 How good is IT?

BA2 identify key criteria involved in evaluating a Digital Product by applying a suitable evaluation tool

The problem is that the perception of how ‘good’ or ‘bad’ a Digital Product may be is skewed by our personal background, who we think it is for etc.

What is needed is an objective tool for measurement and analysis that helps you provide fact-based recommendations.

METHOD:
  • Remove your personal preferences
  • Provide a common understanding of a Digital Product
  • Ground rules for comparisons of Digital Products
  • Provide a fact-based, visual representation of the strengths and weaknesses of a Digital Product

TASK: Hot Potato!
  1. Think back over what we have considered in the last few weeks and write down one thing you can think of that would be good to measure
  2. Pass your paper on to somebody else, read what is on the paper, add your point. Points cannot be repeated
  3. Repeat the exercise, each time reading the statements that are written and adding your own

On your own sheet, group all you points into the following four groups:
  1. Usability
  2. Functionality
  3. Accessibility
  4. Content

In your teams, develop at least 4 statements from the points generated on your papers that can be used to measure a Digital Product (one for each point above)
  1. Choose a familiar Digital Product
  2. Mark the Digital Product against the criteria on a scale of 1 - 25
    • The total points score is 100
  3. Create a Spider chart to visually represent the analysis
    • Consider using Spreadsheet software, lay the data out in a table and create a chart
  4. Consider which areas would benefit from improvement and what would you recommend

Example Spider Diagram
EXT:

Repeat agin (within the same spreadsheet) for a different product

PLENARY:

Follow the 'How to print a Spreasheet acurately' guide and print your work

Save into your Unit 3 foler as Product Analysis

TB1L6 Do IT with Style

BA2 describe the impact of functionality, usability and accessibility in the design of Digital Products

STARTER:

Circle Map:

Using the guide below and the template provided, write about what we have covered in this unit so far...
  • In the small circle write "What I have learnt this unit"
  • In the larger circle write about what you have learnt in this unit
  • In the rectangle, tell me how you have learnt this new information

Circle Map

"Moving from being a ‘savvy’ user and utilising that knowledge to designing a Digital Product…in other words becoming a ‘savvy designer’ you will start to come across various topics and terminology that might not mean a great deal to you right at this moment, but give it time and you will be speaking with a whole new vocabulary"
TASK:

Pushing the Senses

  • Usability refers to the quality of the Digital Product and the process of designing the Digital Product
  • Functionality is any aspect of what a Digital Product can do for a user
  • Accessibility is the word used to describe whether a product can be used by people of all abilities and disabilities

The Law & Standards

If a Digital Product such as a website or an application is unusable by people with disabilities you are discriminating against them. In the UK this is actual law.

  • W3C Web Accessibility Initiative
  • Disability Discrimination Act

In groups of 5, open up the Guidelines Grid from O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3 and TB1 L6 R4

Split the following list up so that you are all completing 1 disability each within your group:
  1. For People who can’t see very well
  2. For People who are blind
  3. For People who can’t hear very well
  4. For People who find traditional input devices (mouse, keyboard) hard to use
  5. For People with reading/writing language difficulties

Each group must then find an example of a Digital Product, such as a website, to demonstrate compliance to some of their guidelines

Each group to present back to the class on their Guidelines

There are 14 guidelines developed by W3C that developers follow when designing to make sure their product is accessable (not all points will be covered for all products)

Priority 1 - A Digital Product content developer must satisfy this checkpoint

Priority 2 - A Digital Product content developer should satisfy this checkpoint

Priority 3 - A Digital Product content developer may address this checkpoint

W3C Guideline Scale

"A" - all Priority 1 checkpoints are satisfied
"Double-A" - all Priority 1 and 2 checkpoints are satisfied
"Triple-A" - all Priority 1, 2, and 3 checkpoints are satisfied

TASK 2/PLENARY:

Try to find a website that is using the W3C logos somewhere on it's page...

Update your Circle Map to include what we have done this lesson!

TB1L5 What does IT do?

BA2 identify key design features of Digital Products

STARTER:

Design Principles

Consider the rules needed when building a house...

TASK:

What design features should be investigated when thinking about Digital Products?
  • Brainstorm Ideas
  • How much help I need
  • Layout
  • Size
  • Different Media
  • Purpose
  • Links
  • Colours
  • Accessability
  • Advertising
  • Membership

Complete the document O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB1 L5 R2 using the list above to review a Digital Product from the list found here: O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB1 L5 R3

EXT:

Complete a second Product, this time of your choice

The 8 Golden Rules of Design

Strive for consistency
Enable frequent users to use shortcuts
Offer informative feedback
Design dialog to yield closure
Offer simple error handling
Permit easy reversal of actions
Support internal locus of control
Reduce short-term memory load

These principles are obviously not the only ones, but they do help designers make decisions during a design process.

The core of these principles is ‘always keep users in mind’.

PLENARY:

Develope your own principles to use as guidelines for developing a Digital Product, remember our list from before.

Post a new comment to this post, remember to use Name/Website and only use your first name

EXT:

Complete O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB1 L5 HW1 to complete TB1 L5 HW2
  • Choose three personas form the examples provided on TB1 L5 HW1
  • Decide on a Digital Product to investigate and review for each one.
  • On TB1 L5 HW2 identify the name of the persona and the name of the Digital Product
  • Using the design principles we have reviewed last lesson, identify strengths and weaknesses in each Digital Product and explain how this links to the target audience - benefits the target audience/hinders the target audience

TB1L4 Feeling Good

BA2 describe what is meant by 'User Experience' by sampling Multi Sensory Digital Products

STARTER:

Recap the meanings of 'Target Audience' and 'User Centred Design' from last lesson

Discuss these with your partner and prepare to feedback.

Whilst watching, consider multi sensory digital products and your experience of them

TASK 1:

Save the following file into your Unit 3 area: O:\ICT\GCSE ICT Unit 3\TB1 L4 R2 Sensory Products

Complete this document in pairs, but make sure you complete your own copy.

Consider the combination of senses (audio, visual, tactile) being used with each Digital Product you list and how the combination of various elements effect the experience of using the Digital Product…User Experience...

TASK 2:

"User experience is about how a person feels about using a Digital Product. It’s not uncommon to confuse ‘user experience’ with ‘user interface’ i.e. how you access the Digital Product, but the ‘user interface’ is just one piece of the puzzle...."

TB1L3 Hitting the Spot

BA2 relate how digital products align to target audiences

STARTER:

Think about the 4 different products you researched for your Homework. Who do you think the Target Audience is for each one?
  • Game
  • E-Learning
  • Simulation
  • E-Zine

Target Audience

Consider the characteristics and preferences of each person in turn, highlight design features of the MP3 player that meet the needs, characteristics and preferences of each one.

Digital Product designers and developers don’t just make a Digital Product and hope for the best. The range of MP3 players were not randomly designed in the hope that the likes of Joshs, Jeans, Jaynes or Johns of this world would like, buy and use them!

Putting the intended users of a Digital Product at the centre of the design and development is called User Centered Design.

Putting the User at the Centre
  • Requirements gathering - Understanding and specifying the context of use
  • Requirements specification - Specifying the user and/or organisational requirements
  • Design and build - Producing designs and prototypes
  • Evaluation - Carrying out user-based assessment of the Digital Product

UCD - methods for Gathering Information

Some of the most popular user-centered design methods for gathering the information needed to inform the design and development include:
  • Focus groups - Requirements gathering
  • Questionnaires - Requirements gathering & evaluation
  • Interviews - Requirements gathering & evaluation
  • Usability testing - Design & evaluation

TASK:

Think, Pair, Share - Considering the variations and combinations, how could you test a website before its release?

Think, Pair, Share - Do platforms make a difference?

In your groups, investigate your given website from the list below and feedback onto your slide. Think about how the website could benefit from the alternative platform of an iPad...
  1. http://mocoloco.com/ - feedback
  2. http://www.itsnicethat.com/ - feedback
  3. http://www.pictorymag.com/ - feedback

*You may need to add an 's' after the http on the feedback links

TB1L2 Working to a brief

BA2 take an iterative approach to design and development involving key issues when working to a brief e.g. timescales, resources

Ask students to:
  • think about when they have worked to a brief.
  • consider when they have developed proposals. This could be evidenced with something from school or an out of school activity. Possible examples may include organising a party, a trip, a school fair, a holiday, a sporting/musical event etc.

Complete the activity below:

List as many things you think should be considered when making a Proposal..

NOTE: List your ideas on different Post-It notes. A different colour should be used for each group.

Categorise all of your ideas into the following sections. It is suggested that everything you need to consider can be listed into these sections.

The 8 Categories of a Proposal

Photo Montage

BA2 illustrate you understanding of 'Photo Montage' by applying your skills to create a new Product

Take a look at the example below...

Photo Montage Example
What makes it a Photo Montage?

Definition: Photo Montage - Photo Montage is the process and the result of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining two or more photographs into an illusion of an unreal subject.

TASK:

Find a reasonably sized image on the internet (800 x 600 Pixels at least) and open it in Serif Photo Plus X6, this will be your Background.

Find suitable yet unrealistic images and seamlessly insert them into your background.

What effects could you apply to make your image more 'realistic'?

HOQ:

Why would I choose to use this software over something else, Word or Publisher for example?

PLENARY:

Use the comment box to describe two things you have either developed from last year OR that you have learnt brand new this year. If you have more than 2, list away!!

Please comment as Name/Website and write your first name only.
